LOTE (Languages Other Than English)

Language Department: French, Latin, and Spanish

All sixth graders take Latin once a cycle to introduce them to the foundations of the Romance languages and English.  The course focuses primarily on vocabulary and culture and is integrated with the grade six Humanities and STEM courses.

Two years of LOTE in grades seven and eight are offered sequentially and constitute Level I of the study of a foreign language.

Listening and speaking activities are designed to give students elementary communication skills in the targeted language.

Reading and writing skills are introduced by materials presented in topical, situational formats using a variety of visual and auditory stimuli.

Cultures of the various areas where the languages are spoken are introduced through the use of authentic documents, and the study of complex language patterns are introduced to allow the students to talk about situations in more depth and detail.
